Original Art or Print?
Although people collect one or the other for various reasons, we suggest original art is priceless. Just look at Rolla's Orval Reeves' acrylic of Round Springs in the photo. All of the artist's creativity, energy and in some cases - tears have been poured into that one single product. There is no substitute.
When buying work marked "original" or "handpainted," make sure you are not buying a handpainted copy of an original. There are artists who make a living copying work and selling it as original.
Get To Know Them Get to know your favorite artist. If they are having a showing or open house, stop by and meet them. Ask them about their interests and why they focus on the subjects of their works. This will add value to your understanding and appreciation of their work as well as help you stay on top of what they are producing.
Find your local art gallery. Stop in frequently and get to know the work they feature. Attend open houses and special events. Meet their artists. In Rolla visit the Orval Reeves Gallery on Historic Cedar St. where more than a dozen local artists are regularly showcased.
What About Prints?
There is a place for prints. Artist signed and numbered, limited edition archival quality lithographs or other quality prints are the next best thing to owning an original. The signed and numbered limited edition pelican print on the right is by Rolla painter Orval Reeves.
What about unsigned, mass produced art prints and posters of contemporary or classic art? These are not good for investment but work well to decorate and sometimes capture a mood or memory. The small Anton Piecke print in the photo was a gift years ago to our Mom, who loved to go treasure hunting. When she passed, we were given the print, which now hangs in a prominent spot in our home and brings back wonderful memories.
Look For A Date And Signature
As artists develop a following, copyrighted contemporary prints signed and/or dated by the artist or printer may have resale value. Its value also increases as that print edition becomes harder to find. Twenty years ago it was easy to pick up original bird water colors by Salem artist David Plank. Today his prints are the best way to affordably enjoy his work such as this Missouri bluebird print.
Lithographs, Too
Antique or vintage lithographs printed with copyright dates, especially if printed during the lifetime of an artist, usually grow in value. They have artistic, decorative and historic appeal. Antique and vintage engravings, woodblock, hand drawn maps and similar prints are also highly collectible.
Have It Certified
When purchasing an original work of art via an on-line art auction or gallery, at a live auction, art show, art event or art gallery, ask the artist or gallery for a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) and a copy of the artist's statement/bio along with a written sales receipt.
Make photocopies of all of the information you receive. Take a picture of the artwork. Keep one set of copies and photo in an envelope firmly attached to the back of the art. Keep the original documents and photo with your important papers.
By The Way Did you know visual art is the only art form that routinely makes originals available for sale to the public? Original works of art and prints can be wonderful investments. Whichever one you collect,
