Night Night Pooh and Friends Crib Quilt.jpgHappy New Year and thank you for your continued
interest, and support, of Bluebird Gardens Quilts
and Gifts.

During the 14 years we've been in business, you have
helped guide what we've made and offered, and I personally appreciate hearing from each one of you!

In response to your requests, in 2012 we are making and
offering more US-made baby quilts, such as
Ninepatch Teddy Bears baby quilts, with patterns on both
sides including flannel.

We are also making more quilts with environmentally-friendly
bamboo fill instead of cotton. If you haven't touched bamboo
fill, it feels like cashmere and unlike cotton, is easily grown,
farmed and yes, it can also be easily washed. It costs a little
more than cotton but if more quilt manufacturers start using it,
prices should come down. Some of our new, bamboo-filled baby quilts are your
personal favorite themes like Winnie the Pooh. (photo)

Two Quilter's Goodies Bags.jpgOne of your favorite all-time gifts is back, our
quilter's goodies bags, now offered either as a
quilted bag and or Hello Kitty bag.

It's been fun hearing from some of you who were
counting on Santa getting your Missouri
2012 Natural Events Calendars.

Although Missouri Department of Conservation
is sold out, we still have some in stock.

Howard Furniture Care has added a wonderful
new lemon-based furniture polish to their
product line which doesn't leave a hazy build-up
like other, spray products with a lemon scent.
Still trying to decide which one I like best,
the orange oil or the new lemon oil!

If you're in mid-Missouri, stop by the new 11,000-square foot antique and art store
Route 66 Antiques and Art off I-44 exit 189. Antique primitives, art work and
our retail shop is there - plenty of space for vendors if you want to join us!
Call Martha Willy at 573-426-3300.

Poinsettias are a personal favorite but don't make it past the holidays. If you were
given a Poinsettia, here are some tips on after-holiday care.

Thanks again for your support, emails and friendship, and here's to an exciting 2012!

Here's another custom quilt that made me smile at Piece and Plenty's Quilt Guild Show October 2011 in Rolla, Missouri.

One of my favorite gifts to give is a cat quilt because there's little a cat loves more than napping on a brand new quilt, and little a cat lover loves more than to see their cat happy.

This time I'm going to share the story of this charming custom cat quilt first because reading it, just imagine grandmother quilter working with grand daughter on this charming custom quilt!

It's no secret, we love cats at Bluebird Gardens so this quilt entry at Piece and Plenty's October 7-8, 2011 bi-annual Quilt Guild caught my attention.

I loved the details- bird baths, charming nine patch blocks, the different quilting designs in different squares. It's just a charming cat quilt!

I ran across this car in a Rolla, Missouri parking lot.

it reminded me of the old Esso advertising slogan "put a tiger in your tank"!

One of my favorite Christmas cat gifts is a carpet-covered cat tree distributed through Big Lots.
They distribute only a few per store, usually early December.

I bought one for my cats a couple of years ago; another one this year for a relative. These cat trees are the equivalent of a cat jungle gym.

Shirley Honey demonstrates one of her favorite holiday activities, how to take a nap.

Merry Christmas and may you have a relaxing holiday, too!

Ymmm, chocolate mice!

"....Not a creature may be stirring" this time of year but at Bluebird Gardens Quilts and Gifts, it doesn't include mice.

Chocolate mice.

I've been making these handmade chocolate mice as gifts for years and they've become a holiday favorite with several Bluebird Gardens customers.

The ingredients are simple; chocolate bark, Hershey milk chocolate kisses, maraschino cherries and sliced almonds.

Chocolate mice 1.jpg
After heating up chocolate almond bark to melting, dip maraschino cherries in the chocolate and let dry on a cookie sheet lined with paper.

Attach almond slivers to the bottom of Hershey Kisses and using chocolate, attach them to a cherry dipped in chocolate.

chocolate mice 2.jpgI package them in boxes with cat prints all over them but they can be individually stored in small clear bags or on plates.

custom pink cat quilt.jpg
This is one of my favorite steps in making custom quilts, seeing the final product on a bed before I pack the quilt and matching pillow cases for shipping.

This custom sleeping cats quilt is a good example of how it's best to start with one favorite color  and tone - in this case, a medium pink.

Once we had the pink fabric selected, it was a matter of shopping to find other custom fabrics in similar tones.

A couple of trips to area fabric stores and we settled on mint green tones and old fashioned lilac purples, great choices to keep the mauve pink and sky blue patchwork sleeping cats company.

Two matching pillow cases later, and this charming custom sleeping cats quilt is ready for company!

Kitties in Pink Throw.jpg
It's not that I can't find cat lover gifts; it's that I'm very picky about the ones we carry at Bluebird Gardens.

Cats can be cute and sweet, but when I think of cats, I laugh.

There's something fun and joyful about how a cat sees the world - think about things cats like to make into toys!

So when I smiled when I first saw this cat throw, I knew it was going to be joining our inventory.

The applique cats are also smiling; some in tones of pink and red cottons - one's a little blue guy with pink splots - see him, bottom right?

We can add cat names either under or over each cat to make this into a charming personalized cat lover gift.

There's also room at both the top and bottom of the throw to embroider a cat lover's name, maybe birth date to make this into a very nice personalized gift.

The cats have flowers and hearts surrounding them; all applique designs with a whimsical feel.

And wouldn't this make a great quilted wall hanging in a baby nursery?

shirley with rubber band.jpg
Bluebird Gardens has always had a soft spot for animals, especially cats - from custom cat quilts to  tips on how to grow catnip, cats are a natural companion to quilts.

One of the things that inspires us about cats is how imaginative and creative they are; cats will make a toy out of almost anything!

In photo, Shirley Honey and her latest new "toy," long rubber bands.

Shirley has now hoarded every rubber band in the house - the longer, the better, and she instinctively seems to know when a new rubber band comes through the door.

Her favorite supplier is US Postal Service - they use the longer rubber bands around mail bundles.

At first I was worried she would chew or eat them but she doesn't.  I still monitor the rubber bands, just in case. Apparently they are decorative; I find them in all sorts of places around the house, even in the fish tank.

Our list of favorite homemade cat toys prompted Kay in Kansas to write about her two cats, Sylvia and Darla, and their favorite homemade cat toys:

Unshelled pecans
Straws
Thread spool
Plastic rings from milk jug
Plastic ring from milk jug with twine tied to it.
Mini hair clip (stolen off of my daughter's vanity)
Old lipstick tube
Jingle bell tied onto ribbon
Oyster crackers

I loved the oyster crackers - who would have ever guessed!

Do your cats have favorite homemade cat toys?

Phelps County Animal Welfare League is selling raffle tickets for a custom Bluebird Gardens pet photo throw, like the cat one in the photo.

This two-year old non-profit group fosters animals from Rolla's Animal Shelter.

Rolla's Animal Shelter is managed by Rolla's Police Department and cares for more than 1,500 homeless animals a year.

The non-profit volunteer group fosters pregnant and otherwise traumatized animals, giving them extra time to recuperate from trauma and hopefully find new homes.

As one of Rolla's Animal Shelter founders 30-years ago, I appreciate the extra love and time this group donates to helping animals looking for new homes.

The winner of the raffle drawing will get a throw featuring 12 photo fabric quilt blocks where their favorite animal pictures will be featured, like the one in the photo example.

The custom throw will be made in custom colors, including having a sleeve on the back so that it can be used as a quilted wall hanging.

You can buy 1 ticket for $1, 3 tickets for $5 at upcoming fall events including Downtown Arts and Crafts Festival October 2 and by contacting Phelps County Animal Welfare League.

Will you help me help them?
