One of the things I enjoy when designing custom quilts is to help customers understand they are not limited in what they can include in a custom quilt design.

Bluebird Gardens customers are usually surprised when I suggest they can add more than pictures to one of our custom memory quilts.

Pictures are wonderful to have on a custom quilt, and are a wonderful way to mark special memories.

But you can also include other mementos, such as  anything else you can think of putting on paper, including personal letters.

The custom quilt in these photos included several letters written by family members to the quilt recipient.

We took the original personal letters and printed them on our Color Plus photo fabric; then made quilt blocks out of them, as we would with photos.

What struck me about these letters was how personal they made this custom quilt.

I could imagine young Andrew curled up on the quilt one night, feeling sad or angry.

As he pulls up a corner of the quilt, he reads one of the letters telling him how wonderful he is and how much he is loved.

 As a society we don't write letters any more, so what a wonderful way to capture that social practice in a way that will be appreciated every day.

Now that the family has presented this white custom anniversary photo memory quilt to the happy couple, I can show you how well it turned out.

What I love about this white custom photo memory quilt is how much time family members put into making each of their custom photo quilt blocks.

Some of the quilt blocks are collages of photos, which are typical custom photo memory quilt blocks.

The ones that caught my attention were the custom photo quilt blocks family members made in a scrapbook style, including photos, original artwork and the name of the child featured in the block.

Several custom quilt blocks featured baby photos next to a footprint or hand print.

The custom photo quilt blocks with a baby picture, then a high school picture were also fun to see. You get a sense of the child's personality and interests looking at those custom photo blocks, making this custom photo memory quilt even more special.

I often tell customers they have the hardest job designing a custom photo quilt. They are the ones who have to go through all those family photos and decide which ones to include, and not include, in a custom photo memory quilt.

This is one of my all-time favorite projects, printing original children's artwork onto printable fabric blocks so they can be made into charming quilts.

These custom quilts have been very successful as school fund-raising projects and retirement gifts.
