Periodically we get emails from customers who want to know if they can keep their quilts in the plastic bags we use to ship.

To protect our quilts during shipping, Bluebird Gardens does add a ribbon, gift card and places them in plastic bags but only for temporary protection.

Quilts should  not be stored long term in anything plastic, including plastic bags. Here's a complete guide on how best to care for your quilts.

Our quilts are made out of cotton and need exposure to oxygen to maintain the integrity of cotton fibers.

If you want to protect a quilt in storage, wrap the quilt in an old cotton pillow case or a piece of cotton.

Roll it into a bed roll and re-fold every 6 months so you don't create a crease.

Another good place to store a quilt is on a bed in a guest room.

Hi, I love your custom quilts from kids art, we need something for a school fundraiser but how do I clean it? I don't want to auction something that can't be cleaned, especially for kids....

Hi Sally,

Thanks! Our custom kids artwork quilts all can be washed in cold water with gentle soap like Ivory or Woolite and dried on cool in your home dryer. We include a free custom quilt guide with every custom quilts.

We also finish these custom quilts with detailed machine quilting so they will hold up to a lot of loving.

Finally we use Epson ink jet printers with our Color Plus Fabric blocks, which sets the ink so the color will remain true for a long time.

By the way, these custom quilts are very popular (and successful) for school fundraisers.

Another successful fund raising idea is to frame the original, signed art work and offer it as wall art.

I'm looking forward to seeing your kids art work. Until then!

What is the best way to protect a quilted wall hanging?

Hi Shelley,

There are several things you can do to protect a quilted wall hanging.

First, make sure you hang the quilt away from direct light, away from heating sources like a floor vent and away from fumes from smoking, cooking, candles and other odor-producing items.

Cottons will quickly absorb odors, and fumes will speed up cotton degradation.

Secondly, make sure your wall hanging is not putting pressure on the quilting, especially if it's hand quilting. A properly mounted wall hanging will evenly distribute the quilt weight to minimize wear on the cotton and quilting.

Finally for best protection, have your quilted wall hanging mounted on acid free backing and use a non-glare glass or plexiglass (much lighter to hang) Mount in a protected area away from direct sun.
