Visitors to my garden often ask if I've ever picked apples or pears off my compact dwarf fruit trees.
This year, I picked both - apples from the dwarf compact apple tree, and more than 4 dozen pears from my compact pear tree - grown with no chemicals or sprays, although a deer did nibble on a couple apples and one of the pears (on table in photo)
A friend told me to pack the pears in brown bags to ripen so I added an apple to each brown bag and stored them in a cool, dry place.
After a few days, they started to ripen; just enough give to the touch to let me know it was time for a treat.
I was so pleased, I shipped boxes of pears to my two brothers and their families. Well, they were my first....!
