A friend gave me a copy of this 1953 edition and I have it in my gardening books collection as one of my favorites. I pick up copies whenever I run across them, which isn’t very often.

Published by Crown Publishers Inc, New York, USA, the hard cover book has 400 color plates from paintings by Mary Vaux Walcott showing wild flowers of North America in actual size. Some were chosen because they were hard to find, others because they were very familiar.

The featured flowers are from the original portfolio from the Smithsonian Institution, which may explain why you will see people cut the flower pages out and frame them for home decor. That would be a shame since the book is a delight to leaf through with all pages and details intact, including a flower guide and index page.

The red and black hardcover is in excellent condition except for one water spot on the back. The spot does not impact any of the inside pages.. The book jacket has some wear tears.
